MEXICO: Tensions escalate over alleged CIA operations

A report by US broadcaster CNN has detonated debate over the extent of involvement of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in security operations in Mexico. The report, which has been vehemently rejected by the Mexican government and the CIA itself, claims that CIA operatives have been directly involved in fatal operations against alleged cartel members in Mexico, likely without the permission of the federal government. The report comes at a time when tensions were already high after it was discovered that two US officials, believed to be CIA officers, had been working with security forces in Chihuahua state [WR-26-16]. It is likely to further strain the relationship between Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and US President Donald Trump, as Sheinbaum insists that only Mexican security forces should participate in counter cartel operations on Mexican territory.
