In brief: Chile’s government seeks deeper ties with India

*Chile’s Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna has met with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi, leading a Chilean government delegation that aims to boost bilateral trade and investment. Yesterday Pérez Mackenna announced the implementation of a new business visa for Indian citizens. This is expected to facilitate the entry of Indian businesspeople, technicians, and other professionals across various sectors, which the government hopes will help strengthen bilateral economic ties. The business visa will be valid for two years, during which multiple entries into Chile will be permitted for visits of up to 90 days. According to a statement from the Chilean foreign ministry, India’s accumulated investment to Chile totals US$643m. The deputy secretary for international economic relations, Paula Estévez, who joined the Chilean delegation, is cited in the statement as saying: “India has positioned itself as one of Chile’s most strategic partners. In 2025 alone, our trade exchange exceeded US$5.6bn, and during the first quarter of this year, our exports grew by more than 200%. That is why we see a great opportunity to continue strengthening this relationship, both in trade and investment.” Yesterday Pérez Mackenna and Estévez also met with India’s trade and industry minister, Piyush Goyal, discussing opportunities to deepen cooperation in areas such as critical minerals, technology, pharmaceuticals, and the automotive sector.
