US indictment shakes Mexico’s national politics

The governor of Mexico’s Sinaloa state, Rubén Rocha Moya, has temporarily stepped down from his role, following a bombshell US indictment that accused him and nine other current and former officials of ties with the Cártel de Sinaloa. The indictment, unveiled on 29 April, has put Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum in a highly difficult situation and represents a new, ever-more political, chapter in US President Donald Trump’s campaign against Mexican drug cartels.
