In brief: Brazil’s unemployment rises in quarterly terms

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the latest unemployment figures, showing a jobless rate of 6.1% for the first quarter of the year, equivalent to 6.6m unemployed people. This is down from the 7.0% unemployment rate registered for Q1 2025, but marks an increase compared to the 5.1% unemployment registered for Q4 2025. Despite this quarterly rise in unemployment, the Ibge has highlighted that the result for Q1 2026 is the lowest figure registered for the quarter since records under the current methodology began in 2012. The Ibge also stated that a rise in unemployment during the first quarter of the year is not abnormal, given that many temporary contracts, in sectors such as education and healthcare, tend to end around this period.
