*Bolivia’s President
Rodrigo Paz has announced the departure of hydrocarbon minister,
Mauricio Medinaceli, replacing him with Medinaceli’s former deputy
Marcelo Blanco. Writing on social media, Paz said that Medinaceli
“bravely took on a very difficult task and left a package of significant legislation for the sector”. He said that Blanco would
“advance with the elimination of the obstructive state, combatting corruption, and generating the necessary conditions to attract investment, with clear rules”. Also yesterday, the president of Bolivia’s state oil company Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB),
Claudia Cronenbold, resigned, less than a month after
her appointment. In her resignation letter, she said after assuming the role, she found YPFB to be in
“a significantly more deteriorated institutional state than was expected”, blaming this on nearly two decades of mismanagement under previous governments. Cronenbold added that
“the company’s recovery requires long-term legal and administrative re-engineering to safely dismantle the complex bureaucratic obstacles we’ve inherited”, and said that the best route forward is to
“explore new avenues of management that align with the urgencies of the national agenda”.
