In brief: Mexico extends anti-inflation agreement

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a new agreement with retailers, producers, supermarkets, and tortilla shops across the country to keep the price of the 24 items in the basic food basket at M$910 (US$52.79). This represents another extension of the package against inflation and high prices (Pacic), which was first implemented by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024) in May 2022 and previously renewed by Sheinbaum in November 2024, May 2025, and November 2025. Sheinbaum highlighted the inclusion of producers of meat, tomatoes, potatoes, chillies, and other perishable goods in the agreement. Annual inflation stood at 4.59% in March, up from 4.02% in February, according to Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi), above the central bank (Banxico)’s target of 3%.
