*Brazil’s President
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has submitted a bill to reduce the working week, which is expected to be one of the government’s
legislative priorities ahead of the presidential election in October. The bill, which will now be reviewed in congress, proposes a maximum work week of 40 hours, down from the 44-hour limit under Brazil’s current labour laws, while maintaining the maximum workday of eight hours. It would also guarantee two consecutive days off per week. The bill mandates that this reduction of the work week cannot result in decreases in salary. The legislation addresses a demand of the Brazilian left which has gained more media attention in recent years, with left-wing parties such as the Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL) ramping up calls for an end to the so-called ‘escala 6x1’, the norm of working six days a week.
