NICARAGUA: Prisoner release Easter ‘gesture’

Nicaragua’s co-presidential government led by Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo released 1,200 common prisoners as a Holy Week gesture. Interior Minister María Amelia Coronel Kinloch said, “Holy Week reminds us of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ…the confirmation of our faith and the opportunity to recreate ourselves”. Silvio Báez, the auxiliary bishop of Managua who was stripped of his nationality by the Nicaraguan government in 2023 having left the country in 2019 for the US after receiving death threats for his vocal criticism of the violent crackdown on protesters a year earlier, had a rather different take on the significance of Easter. “Jesus died unjustly accused by the powers of this world,” Báez said. “We must ask ourselves whose side we are on: the side of those who crucify or the crucified?”
