MEXICO: On the defensive over enforced disappearances

Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum has rejected the findings of a new report from the United Nations (UN) Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED). The report, which was released on 2 April, urged the UN Secretary-General to bring the situation of enforced disappearances in Mexico before the UN General Assembly (UNGA). This followed similar recommendations made by the committee last year. Sheinbaum’s government has reacted defensively and rejected the report, which is likely to become the latest source of tension between the government and human rights groups and search collectives.
