*Brazil’s Foreign Minister
Mauro Vieira has spoken with US Secretary of State
Marco Rubio on the sidelines of a G7 foreign ministers’ event in France, to which Brazil was invited as an external partner. According to Brazil’s foreign ministry, Vieira and Rubio discussed bilateral interests such as trade and combatting transnational organised crime. The meeting signals an effort to display the strength of bilateral ties, especially amid recent sources of diplomatic tensions between Brazil and the US. On 13 March Brazil
revoked the visa of a US government adviser,
Darren Beattie, whose planned visit to Brazil in mid-March was suspected of being an attempt to interfere in the country’s domestic politics. On 21 and 24 March Brazil’s President
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also
inflamed tensions by making speeches in which he affirmed that Brazil’s mineral wealth belonged to Brazil, criticising countries that he claimed were seeking to exploit the country’s natural resources. The comments came as negotiations for US access to Brazil’s critical mineral reserves have been a major area of interest for bilateral talks in recent months.
