*Mexico’s economy ministry (SE) has announced two actions to be taken with the US regarding the criminal enforcement of intellectual property in the framework of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which is up for review this year. An SE statement highlights that a working group will be established, chaired by the SE and the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR), with the participation of all authorities tasked with law enforcement in each country. According to the SE, the aim is to increase criminal investigations, along with the use of effective techniques to apply the law and carry out successful judicial proceedings, in order to deter crimes against intellectual property rights. The SE also announced plans to establish a roundtable, with copyright and trademark stakeholders, along with the relevant law enforcement authorities to enable rights holders to present issues before the relevant Mexican government authorities, and confirm the referral process with regard to legal proceedings.
