MEXICO: A new chapter in relations with Spain?

The legacy of Spanish colonial rule in Mexico has been a major source of diplomatic tension for the past seven years. Both President Claudia Sheinbaum and her predecessor and mentor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), have denounced the failure of the Spanish government and monarchy to apologise for the abuses committed during the Spanish conquest of Mexico. In recent months, however, Spain has signalled that it is seeking to mend relations.
