*Mexico’s President
Claudia Sheinbaum has said she will make a donation
“in a personal capacity” to Cuba, after former president
Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024)
announced a fundraising campaign for the island, which is facing crippling oil shortages and a humanitarian crisis as a result of
the US oil blockade. Sheinbaum said that Mexico had always stood in solidarity with the Cuban people, saying that
“it is our duty – without putting Mexico at risk – to continue supporting the people of Cuba… because that is the essence of who we are”. Although Mexico stopped sending oil to Cuba after US President
Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on any country doing so, it has continued to send humanitarian aid, with
the latest shipment sent late last month.
