Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has met with executives of Chinese carmaker BYD in Rio de Janeiro, where the company announced plans to invest in a new research and development centre. With a planned investment of R$300m (US$57m), construction of the BYD research facility is expected to begin towards the end of 2026 and be completed in 2028. The centre will be developed on a site connected to Rio de Janeiro’s Galeão international airport. According to a government press release, the centre will focus on BYD projects such as the development of autonomous vehicles. The Rio research centre marks BYD’s next major project in Brazil following the inauguration last year of its
production facility in Camaçari, Bahia state, which is one of the firm’s largest factories outside of China.
