In brief: Mexico’s Sheinbaum responds to CDMX airport taxi protests

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for an agreement to be reached following protests by taxi drivers operating at the Benito Juárez International Airport (AICM), the main airport in Mexico City (CDMX). Sheinbaum was speaking after taxi drivers gathered outside the airport on 11 March, blocking Terminals 1 and 2 in protest against ride-hailing applications such as Uber and Didi operating at the airport. Among the complaints of taxi drivers is that drivers working for ride-hailing platforms do not pay a fee to operate at the airport, as traditional taxi drivers do, leading to higher prices for their customers. Sheinbaum stated that the AICM is proposing that a more remote area be set up where ride-hailing services can operate, with traditional taxi drivers allowed to operate right outside the airport. “Those who pay fees must pay fees to receive that benefit. And for those who don’t, there should also be a benefit for the user so they can safely get to a place where they can take their ride-hailing service,” said Sheinbaum. The AICM had posted a public alert ahead of the planned protests on 11 March, advising passengers to arrive early due to “traffic disruption” at the airport, while the CDMX interior ministry (Segob) also issued a statement warning of possible disruption “due to a mobilisation announced by members of the Transportación Terrestre Nueva Imagen, A.C. [taxi] group, made up of permit holders and operators of airport taxis.”
