*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has published the latest industrial production index, showing a 3.1% monthly increase in January in seasonally adjusted terms. In year-on-year terms, industrial production in January was down by 3.2%. This compares with a 0.4% increase in December when the year-on-year rate was -4.0%. Six out of the nine production categories registered yearly declines in activity, with the steepest year-on-year drops in cars and other vehicles (-22.9%), other equipment, apparatus, and instruments (-22.1%), and textiles, clothing, leather, and shoes (-21.3%). Petroleum refining, chemicals, rubber, and plastic products were up 3.6% while production of non-metallic minerals and basic metals was up 1.7%. Indec also published its construction activity index, showing no monthly change in January in seasonally adjusted terms while in year-on-year terms construction was up 1.2%. This compares with a 3.4% monthly increase in December when the year-on-year rate was up 2.9%. Of the 13 categories measured, five registered yearly increases, with the greatest in ‘other inputs’ which includes faucets, steel tubes, and flat glass (+60.5 %).
