MEXICO: Massive security presence for El Mencho funeral

Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, the late leader of the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), Mexico’s most powerful drug cartel, was buried on 2 March. There was a huge security presence at the funeral in the western state of Jalisco, the CJNG’s stronghold. An eerie sense of calm has prevailed since the initial wave of retaliatory violence after his death following a joint security operation on 22 February, but in the background there will be manoeuvring between rival factions in the cartel’s power structure over the vacant leadership, which could break out into open conflict if no agreement can be reached.
