*Cuba’s energy and mining ministry has announced a massive blackout due to the collapse of the electrical grid, covering some two thirds of the island, from the central province of Camagüey to Pinar del Río in the west, including the capital, Havana. The outage, which affects 10 of the island’s 15 provinces, comes as Cuba is facing intense pressure from the US administration led by President
Donald Trump through an oil blockade, following its January military incursion in Venezuela and removal of former president
Nicolás Maduro (2013-2026). Meanwhile in the latest sign of pressure from Washington on the region, Ecuador, whose President
Daniel Noboa is a Trump ally, announced yesterday that it was ejecting all personnel from the Cuban embassy in Quito. According to Cuba’s foreign ministry (Minrex), no reasons were provided for the move which comes as Noboa, along with other Trump allies in the region, is due to attend a summit in Florida on 7 March with the US president.
