*Brazil’s ministry for ports and airports has completed a tender granting private companies concessions to develop and operate terminals in three port cities – Santana, in the state of Amapá; Natal, the capital of Rio Grande do Norte state; and Porto Alegre, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. The government says that the concessions will result in over R$226m (US$44m) in private investments. The Santana port concession was given to infrastructure development firm CS Infra, which intends to invest R$150m. The Natal concession was granted to mining company Fomento do Brasil Mineração, which promised R$55m in investments. The Porto Alegre concession was awarded to Consórcio Portos do Sul, a consortium of Brazilian companies that operate ports and shipping logistics, which has pledged to invest R$21m. The government’s push for port concessions comes amid recent controversy over a concession in Pará state. A decree to authorise concessions for the port infrastructure in Pará was revoked on 23 February due to
resistance from local indigenous activists. However, the ports and airports minister,
Silvio Costa Filho, said yesterday that, despite the suspension of the decree, the government will continue its studies to evaluate the feasibility of more concessions to private companies. He highlighted that the government aims to grant concessions later this year for terminals in the port cities of Santos and São Sebastião, both in São Paulo state.
