*Honduras’ new Foreign Minister
Mireya Agüero has met China’s ambassador to Honduras,
Yu Bo. Following the meeting, the Honduran foreign ministry issued a statement saying it had “
received documentation relating to the bilateral agenda since 2023” – when relations were forged under the previous leftist Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) government led by former president
Xiomara Castro (2022-2026) after ties were severed with Taiwan. It adds that “
through diplomatic dialogue and mutual respect, Honduras will continue to strengthen cordial relations which promote mutually beneficial projects”. The meeting takes place amid speculation regarding the future of Honduras-China relations under the new conservative Partido Nacional (PN) government led by President
Nasry Asfura who is backed by US President
Donald Trump. On the campaign trail, Asfura said he would review relations with Beijing, having previously
said that Honduras was “
100 times better off” in terms of aid and trade when it maintained relations with Taiwan. Nonetheless, in an interview with Bloomberg last month he
rowed back slightly, saying that he was evaluating the move and had not spoken to Chinese officials, nor did he offer a public message to Beijing. Along with Belize, Guatemala is the only other country in Central America, previously a bastion of support for Taiwan, to maintain relations with Taipei.
