*Leading members of Argentina’s main umbrella trade union Confederación General del Trabajo (CGT) have announced plans to petition the judiciary to strike down the labour reform promoted by the government of President
Javier Milei. The reform was
approved by the senate and
lower house on 11 and 20 February respectively and is expected to face another vote in the senate tomorrow (27 February) after deputies made an amendment. The CGT
has staged multiple strikes in protest against the bill, criticising the proposal as a setback to workers’ rights. However, at a press conference yesterday, union leaders announced that the CGT will not call another general strike. Speaking to the press, CGT leader
Jorge Sola said the union will file legal action on 2 March to request that the judiciary review the constitutionality of the reform. Some trade unions are reportedly planning to launch demonstrations on 27 February while the senate debates and votes on the bill, but this will not be a protest officially backed by the entire CGT umbrella group, which will organise a demonstration to coincide with the presentation of the legal complaint on 2 March.
