In brief: Brazil’s gov’t responds to heavy rains in southeast

*Brazil’s federal government has sent a committee of officials led by the minister for regional development, Waldez Góes, to the south-eastern state of Minas Gerais to coordinate relief and rescue efforts in response to the heavy rains that have impacted the state over the past week. The municipalities of Juiz de Fora, Ubá, and Matias Barbosa have declared states of calamity and are eligible to request federal funding for emergency response services and resources such as food rations, drinking water, and temporary shelters. Góes arrived in Minas Gerais on 24 February and yesterday he visited affected areas in Juiz de Fora and Ubá. According to reports in the media, the confirmed death toll from floods and landslides in Minas Gerais stood at 47 as of yesterday. Meanwhile, the national meteorological institute (Inmet) issued an alert on 24 February due to flood risks in another south-eastern state, São Paulo, with rainfall expected to increase in the state’s coastal cities and towns in the coming days. Meteorologists cited in the press have highlighted global warming as a factor driving the intensification of storms and extreme weather, warning that over the past week the waters in some areas along Brazil’s south-eastern coastline have registered temperatures three degrees Celsius above the historical average.
