Cuba feeling the strain as US heaps pressure on Mexico

Cuba’s government was forced to issue a warning this week to international airlines that they would be unable to refuel on the island for at least a month due to fuel shortages. The announcement prompted three Canadian airlines to halt all flights to Cuba, in a serious setback to the tourism sector, the mainstay of the economy, during peak season. The embattled Communist government, which is already wrestling with an acute energy and economic crisis, lost one oil lifeline in the region with the removal of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, and the US government of President Donald Trump is ratcheting up the pressure on Mexico to cut another by threatening to impose tariffs on any country supplying oil to Cuba.
