Donald Trump aimed at boosting cooperation and investment in mining projects to extract and process critical minerals. The deals were signed yesterday in Washington, where the Trump administration hosted a summit to discuss the global market for critical minerals and rare earths, which has been hailed by US officials as an incipient effort to form a trade bloc of US allies to counter China’s dominance in critical mineral supply chains. The summit in Washington was attended by representatives from over 50 countries, including Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, and Peru. Of the Latin American delegations that travelled to Washington, Argentina, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Peru signed new bilateral frameworks or MOUs with the US yesterday, while the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced a US-Mexico critical minerals action plan aimed at coordinating trade policies and mechanisms.
