In brief: Sharp fall in tourism to Cuba

*Cuba’s national statistics office (Onei) has released new figures showing that the country received a total of 1.81m international tourists in 2025, down 18% on 2024. Bloomberg reports that this the lowest figure in over two decades bar 2020-2022 when tourism was largely shut down due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Of the total, Canada accounted for 754,010 tourists last year, followed by Russia (131,882), the US (110,005), Mexico (56,438), and Argentina (49,428). This all comes as the island, which is facing the loss of cooperation from former chief ally Venezuela, following the US military incursion and capture of former president Nicolás Maduro (2013-2026), was recently hit by US President Donald Trump’s announcement of tariffs on countries which supply oil to Cuba, serving to further exacerbate its multifaceted economic crisis.
