*Mexico’s federal tax authority, Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT), has announced that Grupo Salinas, the conglomerate owned by magnate
Ricardo Salinas Pliego, will carry out a payment for a total of M$32.13bn (US$1.86bn). The SAT said the payment will be made
“in accordance with the benefits established in the tax code and in compliance with applicable court rulings”. It stated that M$10.40bn had already been paid to the treasury yesterday, while the remaining amount will be covered across 18 payments. The agreement follows a long tax dispute with Salinas, who
has accused the government led by President
Claudia Sheinbaum of
“systematic harassment” and
“political persecution”. Grupo Salinas also issued a statement yesterday confirming the payment. It reiterated that both Grupo Salinas and Salinas himself
“have always complied with tax payments”, stating that in the last 20 years, the conglomerate’s businesses had paid more than M$300bn in taxes. It said it was making the payment
“not because we accept that it is fair, but because we seek to close this chapter and put an end to this systematic campaign against us”.End of preview - This article contains approximately 187 words.
