*Gina Campuzano, a senator for Mexico’s right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) has presented three initiatives to reform health legislation with regard to prevention, vigilance, and attention to zoonotic diseases and pests which impact on public health. Speaking before a senate committee, Campuzano claimed that the return of the new world screwworm (NWS), a parasite that primarily infects livestock, was not an “accident”, attributing it to government negligence. A 19 January report by the Mexican association of milk producers (Amlac), which cites official figures from Mexico’s national service for agrifood health, safety, and quality (Senasica), notes a “significant increase” in new NWS cases, with 500 new cases in a week. According to the Amlac report, there were a total of 13,835 NWS cases in Mexico as of 14 January. The US government closed the border to livestock imports from Mexico in July due to the NWS outbreak.
