One of the frontrunners in Peru’s presidential race could soon be ruled out of the running. Lima’s special electoral council (JEE) decided on 5 January to reject the application of Perú Primero to register Mario Vizcarra, the brother of former president Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020), as its presidential candidate. Mario Vizcarra was third in the most recent electoral survey published by the national pollster Ipsos, albeit only on 5% in a race marked by profound voter disenchantment, with almost half of respondents either undecided or determined to cast blank of spoilt ballots.
