More than three weeks on from the 30 November general election, and Honduras’ national electoral authority (CNE) has finally confirmed former Tegucigalpa mayor (2014-2022) Nasry Asfura, of conservative opposition Partido Nacional (PN), as the winner of the presidential contest, defeating veteran candidate, Salvador Nasralla of the fellow opposition Partido Liberal (PL) by less than one percentage point. The 24 December announcement signals an end of sorts to the turbulence which ensued amid a vote count marred by multiple delays, system glitches, complaints of irregularities and alleged meddling by US President Donald Trump who endorsed Asfura [WR-25-50] and threatened to pull cooperation if he lost. As in previous contests, Nasralla has refused to recognise the result, although the international community’s endorsement of it and the rejection of the appeals of the electoral justice tribunal (TJE) against it indicate that Asfura’s controversial victory is set to stand.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1417 words.
