*The agricultural ministry (Sader) of Mexico’s Michoacán state has announced the detection of an
“isolated” case of the new world screwworm (NWS) in the municipality of Villa Madero. The case has been confirmed by Mexico’s national service for agrifood health, safety, and quality (Senasica) and the affected animal attended to and placed under monitoring. Sader Michoacán announced this was the only case of the pest in the state and that it was reinforcing sanitary actions. It called on farmers to review any wounds sustained by their livestock and to report any potential cases. The NWS outbreak in Mexico prompted the US government to close its border to Mexican livestock imports
in July, following a previous closure in May. The federal agriculture ministry
is working to control and eradicate the NWS and is in talks with US authorities on the reopening of the border.
