BRAZIL: Income tax reform to boost economy and equality

The gap between rich and poor in Brazil is notoriously large. There are many reasons for that, but one that helps perpetuate inequality is a regressive tax system that puts a disproportionately large burden on lower-income households. The administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has now taken a small but important step to try and remedy the situation with legislation that raises taxes on the rich and grants exemptions to lower earners.
