*Mexico’s Economy Minister
Marcelo Ebrard has said that there is
“no indication” that the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) will not remain in force following next year’s review process. Ebrard, who was speaking at the Latin American Science and Technology in Society Forum in Cuernavaca, the capital of Morelos state, said that
“90% of the reports” that had been presented as part of the ongoing USMCA pre-review consultation process
“are in favour of the agreement remaining in place”. The comments come a day after US President
Donald Trump suggested that the US might let the agreement
“expire”, stating that Mexico and Canada
“have taken advantage of the United States”. Trump did also leave open the possibility of
“work[ing] out another deal” with Mexico and Canada, but has indicated he will only accept a deal that he deems beneficial to the US. President
Claudia Sheinbaum departed for Washington yesterday where she has said she will have a
“small meeting” with Trump, and another with Canada’s Prime Minister
Mark Carney.
