The 100,000 inhabitants of St Vincent and the Grenadines welcomed a new government on 28 November for the first time in 24 years. Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves took office after winning power with the Unity Labour Party (ULP) in 2001 and went on to triumph in a further four general elections dubbing himself ‘the five-star general’. There are no six-star generals. The centre-right New Democratic Party (NDP) under Godwin Friday steamrolled the ULP, securing 14 of the 15 seats in parliament, with Gonsalves alone retaining his seat in his North Central Windward constituency for his party.
