*Paraguay’s senate has approved the government’s budget proposal for 2026, returning the proposal to the lower chamber for consideration. The senate made some changes to the original G$149.18tn (US$21.37bn) budget proposal submitted by the administration of President
Santiago Peña, raising spending on health, education, public works, sports, and the electoral justice tribunal, among other things. Senator
Silvio Ovelar, a member of the ruling Asociación Nacional Republicana-Partido Colorado (ANR-PC) and chairman of the bicameral budget and finance committee, stated that the budget proposal was based on
“the fundamental principles of fiscal sustainability and greater social equity”, noting it was up 12% on the 2025 budget. The budget is based on a forecast of Paraguay’s economy maintaining a growth rate of 3.8% in 2026.
