MEXICO: Gov’t tackles sexual assault

Mexico’s government has launched a plan to tackle sexual assault and harassment after President Claudia Sheinbaum was publicly groped in early November, in a shocking incident that garnered attention across the world. The president’s assault has brought national and international visibility to an issue that affects millions of women in Mexico each day. Sheinbaum has been clear that the focus should not be on her status as president, but on what the incident says about her status as a woman in Mexico. Speaking at a press conference the day after the incident, she asked: “If this can happen to the president, what’s going to happen to all the young women and women across our country?”
