JAMAICA: Simpson-Miller sets election date

Jamaicans will go to the polls on 27 August to elect a new government. In a mass rally of the ruling People's National Party (PNP) held on 8 July, Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller announced the date, with nomination day due on 7 August. The following weekend both the PNP and the opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), led by Bruce Golding, reported that their supporters had suffered from acts of violence and intimidation.
