Running the data centres that operate artificial intelligence (AI) requires so much energy that the US struggle to provide it as fast as the big tech companies would like. Enter Argentina, which can provide exactly what operators of data centres are looking for: clean energy, plenty of water for cooling, lots of space, and, at least currently, a business-friendly government. And so it was that OpenAI announced in October a project to build a massive, US$25bn data centre in Argentina known as ‘Stargate’, with an estimated electrical capacity of 500 megawatts (MW).
