In brief: Brazil’s coffee exports down year-on-year

*Brazil’s national council of coffee exporters (Cecafé) has released the export figures for October, showing a total of 4.14m sacks of coffee (one sack = 60kg). This marks an increase from the 3.78m sacks exported in September, but is down 20% from the 5.18m sacks exported in October 2024. In a press release, the president of Cecafé, Márcio Ferreira, is cited as highlighting the impact of the steep US tariffs that have been in force since August. “Brazil has always been the most competitive producer and the main provider to the US coffee market, but the 50% tariff is making it inviable to send our product there,” Ferreira said. In October this year, Germany was the top export destination for Brazilian coffee, with a total of 609,570 sacks, followed by Italy with 360,738 sacks. The US ranked as the third highest export destination in October with 347,532 sacks, which is down 54.4% year-on-year. However, there is a possibility that tariffs on Brazilian imports could be reduced, as US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hinted yesterday (12 November) that the US government could soon announce “substantial” tariff relief for several products, including coffee and fruits. According to an anonymous diplomatic source consulted by newswire Reuters, Brazil’s Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio yesterday to discuss progress in ongoing tariff talks.
