CARIBBEAN: Recovering from Melissa’s onslaught

The swift but devastating passage of Hurricane Melissa through Jamaica not only left a mounting death toll, currently standing at 32, but also exacted a heavy economic toll too. In the space of seven hours it is thought to have caused damage equivalent to nearly a third of Jamaica’s GDP, or some US$6bn-US$7bn, for fiscal year 2024/2025. Cuba, which was next in the hurricane’s path, is yet to report any fatalities or quantify material losses, but the United Nations (UN) resident coordinator launched a multi-million-dollar action plan on 5 November to restore essential services and protect vulnerable groups in the most affected eastern provinces.
