Political tensions are rapidly escalating ahead of presidential and congressional elections in Honduras on 30 November. Opposition parties went as far as to accuse the ruling left-wing Partido Libertad y Refundación (Libre) this week of seeking to obstruct the electoral process and cling on to power illegally. This followed the decision by Libre’s president of the legislative assembly to install a permanent committee on 31 October stacked with legislators from the ruling party during the recess from 1 November until 26 January 2026 when the elected president and legislators are scheduled to be sworn in. Their suspicions might have some merit.
