*Cuba’s attorney general’s office has formally charged the country’s former economy minister, Alejandro Gil (2018-2024), with various crimes, including spying, acts detrimental to economic activity or contracting, embezzlement, bribery, falsifying public documents, tax evasion, influence peddling, money laundering, violation of classified document protection rules, and theft and damage of documents or other objects in official custody. The Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel first announced the investigation into Gil in March 2024 which drew headlines given he was among the most senior officials to fall from favour since the dismissals of then vice president Carlos Lage (1993-2009) and foreign minister Felipe Pérez Roque (1999-2009) in 2009. Gil oversaw austerity measures which were widely considered a disaster for the flailing Cuban economy, which has contracted 11% over the last five years according to official figures released in July.
