Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum took to the main square, or Zócalo, in Mexico City (CDMX) on 5 October to mark her first full year in office. Her speech was full of the achievements of her term so far, including the expansion of social welfare programmes, advancement of infrastructure projects, and passage of constitutional and legal reforms. Noticeably absent from her speech, however, was progress in terms of environmental aims. A climate scientist by training, hopes were high that Sheinbaum would usher in a new era of clean energy in Mexico, which has traditionally relied on fossil fuels for electricity generation.
