In brief: Mexico’s gov’t addresses corn producers’ protest

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has said that dialogue will continue between the government and corn producers, who have blocked roads across the country in recent days in protest at the price of corn. Sheinbaum noted that the agriculture ministry (Sader) had presented a proposal to producers and that “the doors are open” for discussions. Sheinbaum was referring to Sader’s proposal to guarantee a price of M$6,050 (US$328) per tonne of white corn, the kind predominantly grown in Mexico, in the corn-growing states of Guanajuato, Jalisco, and Michoacán. Sader stated that this price was 25% higher than the price at which industries could purchase imported corn in the same area of consumption. This price includes a guaranteed fixed base of M$5,200 per tonne, which Sader said was the highest on record, with contributions of M$700 per tonne from the federal government and M$150 per tonne from the state governments of Guanajuato, Jalisco, and Michoacán. Sader will also apply a credit from the Cosechando Soberanía (‘Harvesting Sovereignty’) programme for small- and medium-scale producers, with an interest rate of 8.5% and the support of insurance coverage in the spring-summer 2025 season for white corn from these three states. Sheinbaum added that the agriculture minister, Julio Berdegué, would give an update on the situation at her morning press conference tomorrow (30 October). Corn producers are reportedly demanding a guaranteed minimum price of M$7,200 per tonne.
