In brief: Paraguay’s government expects fiscal deficit to shrink again

*Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña has said that the government’s fiscal deficit is expected to total 1.9% of GDP in 2025. This would be down from 4.1% of GDP in 2023, the year when he took office. The annual deficit for 2024 was equivalent to 2.6% of GDP. Peña declared this projection during a televised cabinet meeting yesterday, in which he also said that his administration has overseen a significant expansion of social programmes and economic growth despite the fiscal adjustments. Paraguay’s economy and finance minister, Carlos Fernández Valdovinos, reportedly said at the meeting the government will foster growth without deviating from its fiscal consolidation plans.
