In brief: Intercity train line in Mexico nears completion

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the Tren El Insurgente, an intercity train line that will connect Mexico City (CDMX) to Toluca, the capital of neighbouring Estado de México (Edomex), will be fully operational at the end of January 2026. In a statement, the president’s office said that the 57km rail line, which has been in the works since 2014, will reduce journey times from two-and-a-half hours to 40 minutes. Sheinbaum announced that all the electromechanical work on the train line was “practically finished”, saying a three-month testing phase would now begin. Andrés Lajous Loaeza, the director of the Agencia Reguladora de Transporte Ferroviario (ARTF), Mexico’s rail transport regulatory agency, said the railway will operate with 20 trains and will be able to transport 140,000 passengers a day.
