*Bolivia has been suspended as a member state of the regional left-wing bloc Alianza Bolivariana para los Pueblos de Nuestra América (Alba) as a result of the 19 October
presidential run-off election which was won by the centre-right
Rodrigo Paz. Alba, which comprises Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Dominica, Grenada, Antigua & Barbuda, St Vincent & the Grenadines, St Lucia, and St Kitts & Nevis, released a statement on 24 October saying that the incoming Paz administration would be
“far-right”. Highlighting Paz’s prior criticism of the authoritarian governments of Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua, the statement accused him of
“disregarding the principles of respect, sovereignty, and cooperation that sustain the integration of the peoples of the Americas and the fundamental values of the Alliance”. Paz, who will take office on 8 November, is expected to realign Bolivia’s foreign relations after nearly two decades of left-wing rule by the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS). He has pledged to support the Venezuelan opposition and has been
offered economic support by nine mostly right-of-centre governments in the region, including the US where he is due to travel next week. Responding to Bolivia’s suspension, Paz asked:
“Who is the Alba to decide what is best for Bolivians?” He said that as well as seeking closer ties with Washington, his government would also work closely with other partners including China and Europe.
