In brief: Nicaragua further boosts cooperation with China

*Nicaragua’s 92-member unicameral legislature has approved the signing of a loan between the government led by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and First Lady Rosario Murillo and China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC) for a total of ¥407.54m (US$57.4m). The loan, which was signed earlier this month, is for the construction of a solar plant in Estelí department. This comes as the government has granted more mining concessions to Chinese companies in recent days. On 21 October Nicaragua granted concessions for a total of 41,805 hectares (ha) in the departments of Chontales and Río San Juan, and the North Atlantic and South Atlantic autonomous regions (Raan and Raas). One concession for 36,955 ha was awarded to the Xinxin Linze Minería Group SA in the municipalities of Nueva Guinea (Raas), El Coral (Chontales), and El Almendro (Río San Juan). Another concession for 4,850 ha was awarded to Xinxin in Puerto Cabezas municipality (Raan). The previous day, the Ortega-Murillo government had awarded concessions for a total of 57,542 ha in the departments of Chinandega and Chontales, as well as the Raas and Raan, to Zhong Fu Development SA, New Era Mining Development Company, and Global Group SA.
