Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that her government will make an initial investment of M$10bn (US$542.7m) to deliver direct support to 100,000 families affected by the
recent heavy rainfall in the states of Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, Querétaro, and San Luis Potosí. Sheinbaum stated that this did not include the investment to be made by Agroasemex S.A., the government-run insurance company, which has already assigned companies to provide assistance to schools, clinics, and roads. As part of the government’s integral support plan, the first tranche of M$20,000 will be delivered to all those affected in the states of Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Puebla, and Veracruz from 22-29 October, while those in Hidalgo will receive the funds from 25 October-5 November. Those affected by the rains will also receive a voucher for household goods such as fridges, stoves, mattresses, dishes, and fans, as well as a food basket voucher. Support will also be provided for housing reconstruction, depending on the level of damage: M$25,000 for moderate damage, M$40,000 for major damage, and M$70,000 for total loss. In addition, the agrarian, territorial, and urban development ministry (Sedatu) will relocate homes located in risk areas. Affected businesses will also receive M$50,000. As of 20 October, the death toll from the rainfall stood at 76 people, with a further 31 missing.
