In brief: Brazil’s economic activity picks up in August

*Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has updated its index of economic activity, showing 0.4% growth in seasonally adjusted monthly terms in August and year-on-year growth of 3.2%. Both figures marked an improvement from July, when economic activity contracted by 0.5% in monthly terms and grew by 1.1% in annual terms. The agricultural sector was down by 1.9% in monthly terms but up by 13.3% in annual terms. Meanwhile, the industrial sector grew by 0.8% in monthly terms and by 2.1% in annual terms, and the services sector grew by 0.2% in monthly terms and by 2.7% in annual terms. The overall monthly growth rate of 0.4% was below the expectations of economists surveyed by Reuters, who had predicted growth of 0.6%.
