In brief: Nicaragua’s gov’t unveils 2026 budget proposal

*Nicaragua’s finance minister, Óscar Mojica, has unveiled the government’s proposed budget for 2026. According to state mouthpiece el19digital, the revenue side of the 2025 budget is C$195bn (US$5.31bn), while the spending side of the budget totals C$186bn. This is up from C$159bn and C$154bn approved for 2025. According to el19digital, C$109bn or 65% of the 2026 proposed budget is allocated to the fight against poverty, 10.2 times more than the amount assigned in 2025. Mojica said that C$53bn of the budget is assigned for public investment, up 3% on that assigned under the 2025 budget. The budget proposal now goes for approval to the 92-member unicameral legislature which, like all institutions, is controlled by co-presidents Daniel Ortega and First Lady Rosario Murillo.
